Hi, I’m Maraya Pena

I'm a Marriage and Family Therapist Intern (MA) and founder of One Percent Counseling, providing in-person therapy in Henderson and virtual therapy throughout Nevada.

I believe therapy can be a place where you don't have to perform, have the right words, or already understand exactly what's going on.

Maybe you're an overthinker who understands your patterns but struggles to respond differently. Maybe you're navigating relationships, anxiety, ADHD-related concerns, or changes in how you see yourself. Or maybe you simply know that something feels off and you're ready to understand yourself a little more deeply.

Wherever you're starting, we'll begin there.

My approach is warm, grounded, curious, and collaborative. I'll meet you with compassion, and I'll also be direct when it can help you move toward what matters.

We aren't chasing overnight transformation. We're looking for the small, meaningful shifts that can become sustainable over time.

What It’s Like to Work With Me

Therapy with me is curious and explorative, but it isn't passive.

We'll slow things down enough to understand what's happening beneath the surface like your thoughts, emotions, relationships, experiences, needs, values, and the stories you've learned about yourself.

And then we'll explore what you want to do with that awareness.

Sometimes that means practicing a boundary. Sometimes it's learning to make room for an uncomfortable emotion instead of immediately trying to get rid of it. Sometimes it's building an external support, identifying a need, trying something differently, or simply noticing a pattern for the first time.

You don't have to be "good at therapy."

You can expect me to bring curiosity, compassion, humor when appropriate, practical tools, and gentle challenges when they may help you grow.

What Informs My Work

I don't believe therapy should look exactly the same for every person. Depending on your goals, experiences, and needs, I may draw from:

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Building greater psychological flexibility, making room for difficult internal experiences, clarifying what matters, and taking values-aligned action.

Narrative Therapy
Exploring the stories you've learned about yourself and creating room for identities and possibilities that may have been overshadowed.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
Understanding emotional needs, attachment, and patterns of connection and disconnection within relationships.

ADHD + Executive Functioning Support
Exploring realistic supports for overwhelm, initiation, organization, emotional experiences, and daily functioning.

Somatic-Informed Practices
Increasing awareness of what's happening in the body and incorporating grounding and regulation strategies when appropriate.

These approaches are tools—not formulas. We'll collaborate on what feels useful and relevant to you.

A Special Interest in Women’s ADHD

I've completed specialized training in women-centered ADHD support through the W-CAT model.

This training deepened my understanding of how ADHD-related experiences can intersect with gender expectations, culture, environment, relationships, and the experience of feeling misunderstood or "behind."

It also reinforced an approach I value throughout my work: compassion over shame, realistic and flexible skill-building, and collaboration with external supports and structures that fit someone's actual life.

My role is not to provide psychological testing or diagnose ADHD through specialized assessment. When appropriate, therapy can be a space to explore your experiences, develop supportive strategies, process the emotional impact of ADHD-related concerns, and collaborate with other providers involved in your care.

What We Can Explore Together

You might find yourself here if you're navigating:

Anxiety + Overwhelm — overthinking, perfectionism, urgency, emotional overwhelm, or difficulty slowing down

Relationships — boundaries, communication, people-pleasing, recurring conflict, disconnection, or identifying your needs

Self-Worth + Self-Trust — questioning yourself, navigating identity changes, struggling to take up space, or wanting to reconnect with who you are

ADHD-Related Concerns — executive functioning challenges, emotional overwhelm, difficulty starting or following through, masking, or feeling chronically "behind"

You don't need to fit neatly into one category. You're a whole person, and our work can make room for the ways these experiences overlap.

Why One Percent Counseling?

I chose the name One Percent Counseling because meaningful change rarely happens all at once.

Sometimes progress is:

  • having the conversation you've been avoiding

  • noticing a pattern for the first time

  • asking yourself what you need

  • creating one support that makes tomorrow a little easier

  • choosing something that matters to you even while anxiety comes along

Those changes may feel small, but small doesn't mean insignificant.

One percent shifts can build into meaningful change over time.

That's the philosophy I bring into the therapy room: less pressure to transform overnight and more space to create change that feels intentional, realistic, and sustainable.

Small Steps. Meaningful Change.
