Therapy Approaches

How therapy works here—simple, practical, and tailored to you.

Therapy that fits you (not the other way around)

There isn’t one “right” way to do therapy. What matters is that you feel safe, understood, and supported—while also getting tools that help in real life. I use a few different approaches depending on what you’re navigating. Here’s what they mean in plain language.

Narrative Therapy

You are not the problem.

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t what you’re going through—it’s what you believe it says about you.

Narrative therapy helps you step back from painful beliefs like:

  • “I’m too much.”

  • “I’m not enough.”

  • “I always mess things up.”

  • “This is just how I am.”

  • “We’ll never change.”

We look at where those messages came from, how they’ve shaped your choices, and what it would look like to build a story that fits who you are now.

In sessions, this might look like:

  • understanding patterns without shame

  • noticing how your past still shows up in your present

  • reconnecting with your values, strengths, and voice

  • rewriting old beliefs that keep you stuck

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

Let’s focus on what helps—then build from there.

If you’re overwhelmed, it can feel like everything is wrong. SFBT helps us zoom in on what you want, what’s already working (even a little), and what small changes can move you forward.

This is a practical approach—less spiraling, more direction.

In sessions, this might look like:

  • getting clear on what you want to feel and do differently

  • finding the moments when things go a little better—and why

  • choosing one realistic step to try this week

  • tracking progress in a simple, encouraging way

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

For couples: break the cycle and feel close again.

Most couples don’t fight because they don’t care. They fight because they feel disconnected, misunderstood, or unsafe—and they don’t know how to get back to each other.

EFT helps couples understand the pattern they get stuck in (the cycle) and create a new way to reconnect.

In sessions, this might look like:

  • slowing down arguments so you both feel heard

  • understanding what’s underneath the anger, shutdown, or defensiveness

  • learning how to repair after conflict

  • building emotional safety so closeness feels possible again

Somatic Practices (Body-Based Support)

Your body matters here.

Sometimes you understand something logically, but your body still reacts—tight chest, racing thoughts, shutdown, irritation, numbness. That’s not you “being dramatic.” That’s your nervous system doing its job.

Somatic practices help your body feel safer so your mind can calm down too.

In sessions, this might look like:

  • simple grounding exercises to feel more present

  • calming strategies for anxiety or overwhelm

  • noticing what your body is telling you (without judging it)

  • creating tools you can use in the moment—during stress or conflict

What this looks like in real sessions

You don’t need to pick a method. We’ll decide together based on what you need.

Some sessions will feel more reflective and emotional. Others will feel more practical and skill-based. Most include both.

And you’ll leave with one “one percent” step—something small, doable, and supportive that helps change stick.
